Q Essay # 1: Summary / Response Choose ONE of the following essays from your textbook as the basis for a summary / response essay: • “An Outbreak of the irrational" Pp. 808-813 • “Finland’s School Success” Pp. 999-1006 • “What My Bike Has Taught Me about White Privilege” Pp.1007-1012 This assignment is based on material in Chapter 3 of your textbook Pp.33-44 Assignment Guidelines: • In continuous essay structure, Essay # 1 should incorporate a summary of your chosen essay from the textbook and your own reflective response to it (see P. 43: “If you’re responding with a reflection”) • A summary accurately reports the main ideas in another writer's work, written in your own words • See sample summary on P. 35 of your textbook • Open the summary with a sentence that clearly identifies the author, title, and purpose (thesis) of the essay from the textbook • Accurately report the main idea (thesis) of that essay and explain how the author supports it—identify the key points the author uses to support the thesis; avoid oversimplifying or distorting the original • Use signal phrases accurately in your essay, see Pp. 34-35 • Summaries are substantially shorter than the original—do not include specific examples, evidence, etc.—no more than two paragraphs should be devoted to the summary in your essay • Transition smoothly into the response section of the essay (there should NOT be two separate parts of the essay) • A reflection response is your discussion of the content of the article; discuss / explain what the information in the essay means to you—did you learn something new? Does the information relate in some way to your own experience? Does the information expand or change your understanding of a particular social / cultural issue? • [NOTE: a simple declaration that you “loved” or “hated” the essay will not fulfill the requirements of this assignment] • Structure your paper so that approximately one third is devoted to summary, and the remainder to response • Paper should be at least 3 FULL pages in length and conform to MLA format MLA Formatting and Documentation is Required in Every Essay Assignment: • MLA formatting guidelines: see the sample MLA sample research paper on Pp. 587-596 in your text book—use it as a model for your essays in this class. . .pay attention to and follow the marginal guidelines • Margins: 1 inch (top, bottom, sides) • Font: Times New Roman, 12 pt. • Line spacing: Double-space EVERYTHING (extra line spaces between paragraphs and other sections of the paper is incorrect). • MLA in-text citations should be used EVERY time material from a source is used—this includes references to material and paraphrases of material as well as direct quotes • MLA Works Cited Page: is always the last page of the essay, but it DOES NOT count as one in the required page length of the essay NOTE: the essays chosen for this assignment are written by informed, professional writers who are acknowledged in their fields. Your purpose here is NOT to criticize or find fault with their scholarship or writing. As college freshman, you do not have the experience or the expertise to critique them, so I will not ask you to do so.
